Janne Claes (°1993, Belgium) studied and finalised her bachelor in Fine Arts in the department Textile Design in 2016 at KASK in Ghent (BE) and obtained her master in Fine Arts in the department Multimedia design in 2017 at KASK in Ghent (BE). During her studies she participated twice in an Erasmus. She implemented this in 2015 at Kunst- og designhøgskolen i Bergen (NO) and in 2016 at La Cambre in Brussels (BE). Currently she works as designer for Marie Jo, participates in the two year project On The Point and is developing her own methodology on the subject "objects".

I’m a multidisciplinary artist working in the fields of design and installation, sculpture, illustration & photography. Elements such as temporality, uncontrollability, matter and form are important aspects of my work. The reoccurring thematic in my work is mostly the value of objects within our society, the interaction that occurs between the viewer & an object and creating works that exist in a state of constant flux, made possible by implementing a semiotic viewpoint.

In my work, I mainly study the relationships between objects and their meaning relative to each other & the viewer. This is a result of a fundamental question in this research: what is the value of objects? And how does this value change within different contexts? By abstracting the functional expectation and re-arranging these “ideas of function” I’ve developed a new idiom. Aside from this, the contexts are created by using different materials and shapes in situation bound installations/presentations. When establishing these contexts, it’s important to create a sort of duality relative to the viewer, the matter and form.

Currently working as Visual designer for Marie Jo, Van De Velde
